A quick tour of every feature: what it does, and who it’s for. Each one gets its own deep dive in separate posts and videos.

If you’ve ever had a trading idea you wanted automated, you know the usual options. Learn MQL yourself, post a job on Upwork and wait a week, or copy code from a YouTube tutorial and hope it compiles.

PositionAlpha is a fourth option. You describe the idea in plain English, and the AI writes MetaTrader code for you to review and test.

It’s aimed at traders who use MetaTrader but don’t code in MQL, and at developers who want a working first version faster.

This post stays at the overview level. I’ll go through every feature so you know what’s there and what it’s for, without going deep into any of them.

This is educational content about a software tool, not trading advice. No tool can promise a bot will make money. Test everything on a demo account before real money.

How it works

The core flow is three steps.

  1. Describe your idea. Write it the way you’d explain it to another trader, for example “buy when EMA 50 crosses above EMA 200, and wait for bullish engulfing”. Or start from a ready-made template.
  2. Shape the strategy. The AI turns your description into precise rules: entries, exits, stop loss, sizing. It also tells you which markets the idea tends to suit.
  3. Download your bot. You get an MT4 or MT5 source file, ready to load into MetaTrader, backtest and run on a demo account.

The split between steps 2 and 3 matters more than it looks. Many badly behaving bots aren’t badly coded. The rules were vague, so the code made guesses. Pinning the rules down before any code is written removes most of those guesses.

The features, one by one

A bot you can actually understand

Every bot comes with a plain-English explanation of when it buys, when it sells and what it can cost you. Every trade has a stop loss, and before you run the bot it tells you what one losing trade costs.

This is arguably the most useful feature. A bot you don’t understand is one you’ll switch off at the worst possible moment.

Strategy templates

If you don’t have an idea yet, start from a template. Templates don’t use the AI, so they’re free on every plan. They’re also a good way to see what a well-defined strategy looks like before writing your own.

There’s a library of classic short-term patterns, many from Larry Williams’ work, each with its own page and logic ready to build into a bot:

  • Oops!
  • Smash day and hidden smash day
  • Specialists’ trap
  • Outside day, down close
  • RSI 50-cross
  • Williams %R, inverted
  • Range compression
  • Moving average crossovers etc.

Market data for research

Pro and Quant include up to 30 years of market data to research ideas before you build them.

Markets covered currently:

  • Metals and energy: gold, silver, copper, crude oil, natural gas
  • Agriculture: corn, wheat, soybeans, oats, coffee, cotton, lumber, feeder cattle
  • FX: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, AUD/USD, USD/CAD, NZD/USD

Change any bot by prompting

Want a trailing stop, a time filter or a different exit? Ask for it in plain English, and the AI updates the bot. Every version is saved, so you can always go back.

Feature 2: Fix or improve your own EA

Already have an Expert Advisor that doesn’t compile, or does something you didn’t intend? Upload it and the AI fixes or improves it. It’s one of the most common jobs on freelance platforms.

Feature 3: Pine Script to MQL5

Found an indicator on TradingView you’d like in MetaTrader? The converter turns a Pine Script indicator into MQL5.

Feature 4: Data API (For developers)

For developers building their own trading products, the same market data is available through an API. This one isn’t for most readers, but it’s there.

Pricing

Pricing is credit-based. Credits pay for the AI’s work, so you pay for what you build, not for features you never use.

Pricing and usage

What things cost:

  • Generate a strategy: 1 credit
  • Build the bot: 6 credits
  • Change a bot: 5 credits
  • Fix or improve your own EA: 6 credits
  • Convert a Pine Script indicator: 10 credits
  • Template bots: free

A step that fails doesn’t use any. On Pro and Quant you can buy extra credits if you run out, from $5 for 10.

For comparison, a simple EA on a freelance platform usually runs $50–100 and a few days of back-and-forth. Here the first bot is free.

Who it’s for, and who it isn’t

A good fit if you:

  • Have trading ideas but don’t code in MQL
  • Code a bit, but want a working first version faster
  • Have an existing EA that needs fixing or changing
  • Want to bring a TradingView indicator into MetaTrader

Probably not for you if you:

  • Expect a bot that makes money out of the box. No tool can promise that, and you should be careful with anyone who does.
  • Need fully custom, institutional-grade infrastructure. That’s still a job for a dedicated developer.

Final thoughts

PositionAlpha doesn’t replace understanding your strategy. It removes the coding step between having an idea and testing it.

That’s the gap where most trading ideas die. Not because they were bad, but because nobody ever tested them.

Over the next weeks I’ll go deeper into each feature: building a bot from scratch, the patterns library, converting Pine Script, and fixing an existing EA. Follow along if that’s useful.
