What Is an Expert Advisor (EA)?
An EA is a program that trades a strategy for you, exactly and tirelessly. Here's what it is, what it can and can't do, and how the pieces fit together.
An Expert Advisor (EA) is a program that runs inside a trading platform (most famously MetaTrader 4 and 5) and executes a strategy automatically — watching the market, opening and closing trades, and managing risk without you clicking anything.
What an EA actually does#
At its core, an EA is a loop that runs on every price update:
every tick:
read the latest prices and indicators
decide: should I enter, exit, or do nothing?
if entering: calculate size, place the order
if exiting: close or adjust the position
manage stops and take-profits
That's it. The "intelligence" is entirely in the rules you give it. An EA doesn't think — it obeys.
What automation gives you#
- Consistency — it never skips a signal because it's scared or tired.
- Speed — it reacts in milliseconds, 24/5.
- Discipline — it can't move a stop loss "just this once."
What it does not give you#
Automation removes emotion from execution. It does nothing for a losing strategy — it just loses faster and more reliably.
An EA is only as good as the logic behind it. Garbage rules, automated, are still garbage. This is why we always start with a tested strategy before writing a single line of EA code.
The pieces of a real EA#
| Component | Job |
|---|---|
| Signal logic | Decides when to trade |
| Position sizing | Decides how much |
| Order management | Places, modifies, closes trades |
| Risk controls | Max drawdown, daily loss limits, trade filters |
